Atos Jiu-Jitsu Faces Community Uproar; Allegations Circulate, No Legal Charges Yet
Developing story – by Evelyn Sutton
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community is witnessing one of its most intense and viral internal controversies in recent memory as Atos Jiu-Jitsu, (lead by legend of the sport, Brazilian champion Andre Galvão) one of the sport’s most prominent academies, finds itself under increasing scrutiny. Allegations concerning misconduct within the organization have spread rapidly across social media platforms, prompting notable departures and growing community concern. As of publication, no criminal charges, arrests, or official law enforcement investigations involving Galvão have been confirmed by authoritative sources.
What Is and Isn’t Confirmed
- What is currently unverified: Specific claims about sexual misconduct or abuse by Andre Galvão or other Atos personnel. These allegations have not been documented in public court records or police statements, and no mainstream news organization has published any proof or reported independently confirmed details.
- What is confirmed: A significant amount of conversation within Jiu-Jitsu forums, athletes’ public distancing from Atos, and local gyms extending support to those departing the team. These developments reflect community reaction, not judicial findings.
- No public statements from Atos leadership addressing the specific allegations have been widely published as of this writing.
Allegations Amplify on Social Platforms
Over the past several days, discussions on Reddit’s BJJ subcommunities, including a widely viewed thread on r/bjj, have mentioned unverified claims about inappropriate conduct allegedly involving Andre Galvão, founder and head coach of Atos Jiu-Jitsu. One post described rumors of inappropriate touching of minors and grooming behavior, while emphasizing the emotional impact on families and students. These claims have gained traction among community members but remain allegations without independent verification or officially published evidence. (read the Reddit)

with more on the way.”
Community Reaction and Departures
Even without legal confirmation, the controversy has had tangible effects within the sport. Several high-profile athletes and coaches have reportedly dissociated themselves from Atos. BJJ media outlets have confirmed individuals like black belt Rose Miller removing Atos affiliations from their social media and terminating memberships, while noting that she has not made specific allegations herself and is focusing on creating safe spaces for women in the sport.
Meanwhile, community sentiment has spilled over into action: local gyms in the San Diego area have publicly offered free training programs to former Atos members, providing opportunities for athletes to continue training while the environment at Atos remains uncertain.
Reported Departures from Atos
While no comprehensive or formal announcements have been issued, multiple departures and signs of distancing from Atos have been widely reported and observed within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. Information has emerged through athlete social media activity, gym affiliations, and community discussion, including Reddit threads, though not all claims have been independently confirmed.
Individuals reported by community sources to have left or distanced themselves include:
- Andy Murasaki — reportedly no longer affiliated
- Rafaela Guedes — reportedly no longer affiliated
- Rafael Silveira — reportedly no longer affiliated
- Alexa Herse — reportedly no longer affiliated
- Two prominent women coaches/professoras — reportedly departed, with additional exits possibly forthcoming
- Front desk staff, including one individual Reddit users claim is related to Andre Galvão — reportedly no longer present
In addition, several athletes have been observed training at other academies in the days following these reports, though many have not publicly confirmed new long-term team affiliations. At this time, it remains unclear whether these moves represent permanent departures or temporary training arrangements.
Voices from the Community
Notable figures in the broader Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world have addressed the situation. Champion Nicole Matthew announced a decision to retire from competition earlier than planned, citing “problematic leadership” and a need for structural change in the sport. In her statement, Matthews described a broader pattern she perceives across multiple organizations, though her comments were general criticisms rather than specific legal assertions.
Nick Salles, a black belt under Mikey Musumeci echoed these sentiments, referring to hear-say about “truly horrific and heinous things” connected to a well-known gym and its head instructor and underscoring the importance of speaking up when injustices are seen.
Tom DeBlass made the following public statement earlier today on his Facebook page:
Context and Responsibility
Andre Galvão is one of Jiu-Jitsu’s most recognizable figures: a multiple-time ADCC world champion and founder of the San Diego-based Atos academy. Under his leadership, Atos has been a powerhouse in competitive grappling, producing champions and hosting training hubs worldwide. It is equally important to recognize that reputation and competitive legacy do not substitute for verified information, especially in matters involving safety and wellbeing.
In cases of serious misconduct, credible reporting requires confirmation from legal authorities, named sources, or official statements. Until such evidence is publicly documented, speculation and community gossip should not be conflated with established fact.
“Nobody has come out and said anything publicly yet due to the sensitive nature of all of this. It’s only been about 2 days. As an Atos member, it’s all true.”

You guys should also address the paragon bjj family. Recently franghina millers protege in Arizona (Manuel Flores of daimyo academy) was caught having affairs with MULTIPLE students. Having went so far as sleeping with them on the same day and then left on his 28th wedding anniversary with his wife ON THE SAME DAY.
Everyone from the daimyo leadership to franghina covered it up. Then franghina just posted that it doesn’t happen in his organization. When someone commented about the misconduct in his own house he turned off the comments.
If this space really wants to assist women they need to start with places like paragon and ask the questions about their relationships with women.
